We knew of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom a long time before we learned of the game’s subtitle. Fans speculated for literally years as to what the game would be called, and then the subtitle’s reveal led to even more theorizing. Now we’re learning that Nintendo almost went with a different subtitle all along!

In the recently-released Tears of the Kingdom art book, Nintendo’s Eiji Aonuma reveals that for much of the game’s development, the team was considering the subtitle of Tears of the Dragon. Without getting into too much spoiler territory, Aonuma mentioned that going with that subtitle might have given away too much about the game before players even had the chance to give it a go.

Apparently Tears of the Dragon was the frontrunner for the subtitle for quite while, and the team was running short on development time, so they thought they’d have to go with that name. Eventually, after numerous other words/phrases, one staff member suggested the name Tears of the Kingdom, which the team felt worked in numerous ways. Once that title was locked in, the game’s logo came together as well, and the rest is history!

This was probably still the intended name when Nintendo said the title might spoil something.

That would've been quite apt:

"For too long now, there were secrets in my mind
For too long now, there were things I should've said
In the darkness, I was stumbling for the door
To find a reason, to find the time, the place, the hour [...]"
