Super Mario Bros. 3 mod 12 years in the making finally sees release
Welcome to Mario Adventure 3!
Super Mario Bros. 3 released all the way back in 1988, but the love for this outing remains just as strong decades later. Plenty of fans still believe this entry to be one of Mario’s finest, but that doesn’t mean there’s not room for improvement!
Modder Scarlett Vixen has spent the last 12 years working hard on a mod that absolutely transforms Super Mario Bros. 3 from top to bottom. While the core mechanics from the game remain intact, so much more has been added to make the game feel like a completely new experience. The end result is Mario Adventure 3, and you can play it now!
Here’s just some of the new ideas you’ll find in Mario Adventure 3:
- Day and night system (Mario Adventure)
- Weather effects (Mario Adventure)
- Item shop (Mario Adventure and Luigi vs Mario)
- Exploration heavy (Luigi’s Coin Quest)
- Traversing and backtracking worlds across the entire game with no cutscenes (Luigi’s Coin Quest)
- Hidden collectibles to gain access to blocked areas (Luigi vs Mario)
- 4 brand-new power-ups and expansions of 4 returning power-ups
- new graphics effects including weather and debris types
The craziest part about this whole project is that it can actually run on an NES as well! If you have a cartridge to put the game on, then you can fire up your NES and play this game just like you did Super Mario Bros. 3 back in the day.
If you’d like to give this game a go, you can find all the information you need on the Mario Adventure 3 website.
