Unlike Samus, Mario has never really made the transition from third person to first person, and Nintendo doesn’t seem likely to change that any time soon. If you’re someone who wishes things were different, then you’re in for a treat. A brand new fan mod was recently released which allows you to play through 2011’s Super Mario 3D Land entirely from a first person perspective.

This mod was created by modder Cyboo, and you can watch a trailer for it up above. Super Mario 3D Land might not be the most popular Mario title of all time, but it was undeniably fun. It also made great use of the 3DS’s 3D capabilities, making it easier than ever to time your platforming maneuvers. Perhaps that’s why it made sense to convert it into a first person game, but you’ll have to try it for yourself to see how well it works in practice.

Cyboo notes that the boss fights are still played out in the normal camera view to prevent the game softlocking or crashing, and that it’s possible the camera may stop working in some areas, but they’re committed to future updates to keep things running as smoothly as possible.

Thanks to cm30 for the heads up!
