Tetris came out on the NES back in 1989, and the game continues to be a fan-favorite all of these decades later. Players continue to test the limits of what’s possible in the game, and just a few days back we saw something achieved that had never been done before.

16-year-old Michael “dogplayingtetris” Artiaga is one of the best NES Tetris players in the world, and he’s been trying to achieve a mystical-level feat in Tetris for quite some time. The aim was to go for a Tetris “Rebirth,” which is when you play all the way to the highest level possible in the game and then keep going until gameplay literally resets back to beginning. After countless attempts, Artiaga finally achieved the impossible and you can see the moment below.

For Artiaga to reach this “Rebirth,” he had to clear a whopping 3,300 lines, which took him 80 minutes start to finish. The feat requires a ton of focus and rapid-fire skills, but clearly that’s something Artiaga has in spades.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership is launching November 7, 2024 for Switch, and there’s no doubt plenty of you have either secured a physical pre-order or are looking to do so soon. If you happen to live in France and you’re trying to figure out which retailer to go with, we’ve got an answer for you.

French Mario and Luigi fans will want to turn their attention to Micromania, as the retailer is offering quite the pre-order bonus for Mario & Luigi: Brothership. All you have to do is plop down cash for a copy of Mario & Luigi: Brothership and you’ll come away with the above steelbook case at no additional cost! Unfortunately, it seems Micromania in France is the only retailer offering this option for now.

The brothers return for a brand-new adventure on the high seas! Set sail with Mario and Luigi on Shipshape Island (part ship, part island) and journey through the vast world of Concordia. Launch out of Shipshape’s cannon to visit, explore, and quest your way through islands that range from tropical rainforests to bustling cities. Meet new friends along the way, like Connie and Snoutlet (definitely not a pig), and encounter familiar faces from the Mushroom Kingdom like Peach and Bowser, who may help—or hinder—you on your journey!

You’ll have to rely on Mario and Luigi’s brotherly bond to succeed. Use Bros. Moves to get past obstacles while you explore, and powerful Bros. Attacks in a dynamic twist on turn-based combat. You’ll need every edge this “brothership” will give you to save the day!

Monolith Soft working on new in-house engine for large-scale projects

Weren't they already making large-scale projects?!

Monolith Soft has been climbing higher and higher with each passing year since Nintendo’s acquisition. The developer has made an incredible name for themselves with the Xenoblade series, and they’ve also lent a helping hand in bringing some of Nintendo’s biggest franchises to life. While the studio has done incredible work so far, it seems they’re just getting started!

Monolith Soft has revealed that they’re working on a new in-house game engine. This engine is based on one Monolith Soft created in 2010 for Xenoblade Chronicles, and the plan is to greatly expand what the engine can do, with a focus on large-scale game development. The hope is that putting in these efforts now will reduce the amount of man-hours needed later.

Monolith Soft said they’ve reached a point where they can no longer tackle projects with a small amount of people, so getting things in order with a new engine is paramount. The studio also said that going with a third party engine wasn’t viable, as they needed an engine that was perfectly suited to their needs.

Currently, Monolith Soft’s devs are doing work on model rendering and effect engines that will be a part of this new engine. They’re also doing experiments with different technologies that could be employed in the engine as well.

The legal battle Nintendo has with Palworld developer Pocketpair is the one everybody has their eyes on, but now there’s more courtroom drama bubbling up that could prove to be even more interesting.

Nintendo threatened to sue Ryan Daly back in July over the sale of modded Switch units that enabled piracy, among other things. (h/t VGC) Nintendo said they’d follow through with the lawsuit if Daly didn’t halt sales of the modded Switch units, but Daly agreed to call off his operations. The only problem is that Daly never actually stopped sales.

Daly actually continued on with sales of the modded Switch units while claiming to look for a lawyer. With this being the case, Nintendo filed a federal court complaint with six charges against Daly, including “trafficking in circumvention devices” and copyright infringement. Daly has now fired back, saying he’s done nothing wrong.

Daly, responding to Nintendo’s court complaint, either denied wrongdoing outright or said he didn’t have enough information to confirm/deny, so therefore he denied anyway. Furthermore, Daly listed 17 ‘affirmative defenses’ that would supposedly clear his name, and they include fair use, invalid copyrights, unjust enrichment and fraudulent inducement.

From here, the legal battle will continue with both sides gathering evidence for discovery, and Daly will be doing so without a lawyer. It’s hard to imagine this going Daly’s way, but I guess we’ll have to keep a close watch and see what happens!
