Keegan Michael-Key was the voice behind Toad in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and it seems he’ll be reprising the role in the upcoming sequel. The film isn’t coming out until April 3rd, 2026, but if you’ve been hungry for some fresh details on what the movie will offer, Keegan was more than happy to share some insight.
In an interview with Men’s Journal, Keegan Michael-Key talked about The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel. We don’t get specifics, but we do get some tidbits that should whet the appetites of Nintendo fans. Here’s what Michael-Key was willing to share about the Mario follow-up:
- the movie is a little broader in scope
- where it takes place is “very intriguing lore and the Mario world”
- the film will have “some really fantastic Easter eggs”
- the sequel has “really widened out the universe”
- you’ll see some new characters and old favorites
- there will be some really deep cuts for Mario fans
We’ll likely have to hang tight for quite awhile to get some concrete info on the film, but these teasers are certainly exciting to hear!

6d agoKeegan Michael-Key seems like a really cool guy, I saw an interview with him for Transformers One and he seemed to really know his stuff and was passionate about the series, seems like it's the same way for Mario.
