Matcha Martinis Might Just Be the Latest Up-and-Coming Cocktail of 2023

Bright green in color, the matcha martini is a beautiful, eye-opening and of-the-moment cocktail.

Remember way back when the espresso martini was the cocktail of the year? Well, that was 2022. In the early months of 2023, the hottest cocktail may now be the matcha martini. “Ladies, I’m afraid to tell you that the espresso martini is officially out,” says the voiceover in one TikTok video by @cocktails. “It’s time for the matcha martini. Trust me, you’ll be able to party all night long.” Part of the espresso martini’s appeal was its nighttime hit of caffeine and that it looks cool in the glass. With its bright green color and a gentler hit of caffeine, it’s no surprise that the matcha martini is its successor.

Since the cocktail is so new, there is no set way to make the cocktail yet. If you look at the TikTok hashtag #matchamartini (which has 2.6 millon views!) there are dozens of variations. Most call for vodka, some call for vanilla syrup and heavy cream, others call for white chocolate liqueur, and some even replace the vodka with white rum or tequila blanco. So feel free to experiment!

What Is Matcha?

Matcha is a vibrant green powder that originated in Japan. The word “matcha” translates literally to “powdered tea” and gets its stunning color from the high-chlorophyll content of the specialty leaves.

The matcha powder is combined with hot water and mixed using a specialty bamboo whisk (or a fork). The result is a frothy, velvet-smooth drink that’s sweet, floral and loaded with nutrients. Matcha is reported to be full of antioxidants, vitamin C and fiber. Matcha has a pretty high level of caffeine, so you’ll also get some of the same stimulating effects of coffee.

There are numerous variations floating around the internet, but this rendition is slightly lower alcohol and slightly less sweet. This recipe calls for white creme de cacao—definitely use white here rather than dark because you want the vibrant green color in the cocktail. You can add a little more simple syrup or creme de cacao if you like a sweeter cocktail. But don’t omit the simple syrup, because the matcha needs the texture. I prefer a ratio of 3 ounces matcha to 1 ounce vodka, but if you like a stronger drink, you can go with 2 ounces matcha to 1 ounce vodka. Other variations use white chocolate liqueur instead of creme de cacao.

Ingredients

  • 2-3 ounces matcha, brewed and cooled
  • 1 ounce vodka
  • 1/2 ounce white creme de cacao
  • 1/4 ounce simple syrup
  • Pinch of matcha powder (for garnish)

Directions

Add the matcha, vodka, creme de cacao and simple syrup into a cocktail shaker.

Add ice and shake well.

Strain into a cocktail glass and sprinkle with a pinch of matcha powder to garnish.
